| Director's
welcome
Welcome to the TiiMS Web site!
The Texas Institute for Intelligent Bio-Nano
Materials and Structures for Aerospace Vehicles (TiiMS) is a NASA
University Research, Engineering and Technology Institute (URETI).
TiiMS comprises six universities in Texas: Prairie View A&M
University, the University of Houston, Rice University, University
of Texas at Arlington, Texas A&M University and Texas Southern
University. We have brought together more than 30 of the finest
engineers and scientists to foster collaboration on some of the
most complex problems in the realm of bio-nano technology. On this
research team are a Nobel laureate in chemistry and several members
of the National Academies.
The major research theme of TiiMS is the marriage
of biotechnology with nanotechnology to enable the development of
intelligent reconfigurable aerospace structures. This will be accomplished
through this cross-institutional team of researchers and students.
The research component of TiiMS is a synergy of four major research
thrusts: functionalized nanomaterials, multifunctional material
systems, biosensors and devices, and intelligent systems. We face
a major technical challenge of merging the nano to macro scales,
both in modeling as well as physical realization.
Our ultimate goal is to educate a cadre of scientists
and engineers for future aerospace enterprises. Each of the universities
participating in TiiMS has numerous ongoing efforts to increase
the number of young people in the United States with degrees in
the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Hence, opportunities will be available for pre-college, undergraduate
and graduate student support to conduct research with the world-renowned
faculty members involved with the institute.
Again, I welcome you to the TiiMS Web site. Please
review our activities and revisit us in the future as more information
is added to our site regularly. You are more than welcome to contact
us and we will be more than pleased to assist you.
Sincerely,
Dimitris C. Lagoudas, Ph.D., PE
